Hands On!

DIY Neon Signs

I bet most of you reading this are already feeling excited about this article. Neon signs are bright, neon signs are beautiful — but their price tags are out of this world!

If you had considered buying them, you would know how costly they are. But fret not! Put your wallet aside and whip out your creativity, and join us to create our very own neon signs!

Here are the few items that you will need:

  1. Canvas/ wooden board
  2. EL wire (3 metres)
  3. Thread
  4. Needle
  5. Sharp ‘pointy’ object
  6. Pencil
  7. Some scotch tape

You can actually use different types of boards for your Neon Signs depending on how much effort you wish to put in. A canvas board would be much easier to work with as compared to a wooden board, but the latter would definitely be more attention grabbing.

Think of a design for your Neon Sign, it could be a shape or a word. In this tutorial, I will be working on the word ‘dreamer’— suitable to be placed in any bedroom. 🙂

Step 1: Grab your pencil and lightly draw your design onto your board.

Step 2: Once you are done with your pencil sketch, grab something with a pointed end and poke through your design from the back to create a hole for your EL wire to go through.

Step 3: Poke your EL wire through the hole from the back and shape it according to what you have drawn on your board. You may use scotch tape to stick them into place.

Step 4: Now that you can see your design clearly, grab your thread and needle and it is time to do some sewing. Carefully remove parts of the scotch tape as you sew your design into place. Make sure to use thicker thread so that it does not break easily.

Step 5: Once you are done, poke another hole from the front of the board to insert the excess EL wire. Coil the remaining wire and hide it at the back of the board.

Your final artwork should look a little like this!

Last but not least, use a hot glue gun and stick the battery pack to the back of your board. Insert some batteries and your neon sign is ready to go!

Now it is time to go to a dark room and switch on your neon lights! Feel free to explore and experiment on your own with different coloured EL wires — there are a whole lot of different varieties you can find online.

You are now a master at customising your very own neon signs with your wallet unharmed! Not only does this make an awesome home decor, but it also works really well as a nice handmade gift. 🙂
