A Relaxing Nautical Retreat

The trickiest part about having a nautical-themed home interior is that it is easy to go overboard (heh). Pun aside, how do you subtly infuse nautical elements into your home? You do not have to stick to the typical anchor and lifebuoy motifs … learn to mix and match textures and colours to create your little nautical retreat.

This room is an excellent example of how to get the nautical theme spot on!

Blue and White

Nothing reminds more of the sea than blue and white! Different shades of blue elicit different psychological reactions. Sky blue is supposedly the most calming. Use it against a white base as pops of colour, in your furnishings and room accessories, or as a light wash over a feature wall.

Another familiar nautical motif is stripes. In this room, the blue and white striped curtain predominates. And there are stripes used elsewhere too. But the room avoids looking busy as the secret lies in the different size and orientation of the stripes. The wide vertical stripes of the curtains are offset by the pencil thin stripes of the sofa cushions and bedding, and balanced tastefully by the overall monotone colour palette.

Decor Choice

These floor lanterns demonstrate how you can match a theme, without being too overt. Its white (you cannot go wrong with that!), but it also has a grungy appearance which makes it look like it has been near the sea.
