Finding the Right Washing Machine

Not certain which washing machine model will fit your family the best? Your choice will depend on the design of your home and budget, or it could just come down to personal preference. Here are some factors to consider.

Front-load vs top-load

• Space

Before choosing your new washing machine, measure the available space carefully versus the appliance dimensions. Deciding between a front-load or a top-load washer is largely dependent on which design will fit your space. If you are faced with a super-narrow space, a front-loader that stacks with the dryer may be your best bet.

• Ergonomics

Front-loaders usually take up floor space when its door is opened, and you will need to bend down a lot to load and unload your laundry. Although top-load washers are easy to load, and adding last-minute laundry is a breeze, unloading laundry could be a back-killer since you will need to reach down into the tub to get all your laundry out.

• Water and electricity usage

As the washing machine is one of the most frequently used appliances in the home, it is important to compare water and energy consumption amongst the different models in the market.

PUB rates washing machines using 2- to 4-tick ratings. Washing machines that use 6 litres or less water will get 4-tick rating. So keep an eye on the water efficiency label on the display sets when you compare washing machines.

High-efficiency (HE) washing machines are increasingly popular with home owners. Whether top or front-loader, they provide a much gentler wash with less water and energy used, compared to the traditional machines.

• Cost

The cost depends on a few factors – size, front or top-load, traditional or high-efficiency. You should weigh the cost against the water and electricity usage to decide on the best washing machine for your home.

Washer dryers

Alternatively, you may consider washer dryers if you are short of space. However, these may not be suitable for large families as the dryer function has a reduced capacity. If you have a full load of washing, you may have to dry them over several cycles. Another downside is the cost – such washer dryers tend to cost a lot more than the normal washing machines.

So before making your purchase, consider the pros and cons of each model to see which one best suits your needs.
