Unpacking from a Winter Wonderland

Hello December! A time for food, festivity, and year-end vacations. If yours is a getaway to colder climes, be sure to store your winter clothes well upon your return. (I know, no one likes unpacking luggage. 🙂 )

Warm Woollens

It might sound obvious, but be sure to thoroughly clean your coats, jackets, and sweaters, otherwise you might find mouldy clothes a year from now—gross! A number of these articles will require dry cleaning or hand washing in cold water, such as those made with wool, cashmere, or filled with down. Be sure to read the labels before tossing your clothes in the washing machine.

Also, remember to turn out all pockets beforehand—they are a hot bed for loose change and receipts.

I find vacuum-packing the best way to store these bulky items. Place them folded in the bag, turn on the vacuum, and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing the bag compress into a fraction of its original volume. I also toss in a few silica gel sachets for good measure, to prevent mildew from forming.

Footwear

Similarly, clean your shoes or boots, inside and out, of all dirt and grime, especially if they are going into months-long storage. Wipe them clean with a solution of soap and warm water, and leave them out to dry. If you are fastidious, you can clean the soles as well.

To store, stuff your footwear with shoe trees or plastic bags before placing them in a shoe box, so they do not lose their shape.

Leather Care

A wrung-out damp cloth usually suffices in removing most surface stains from leather items like jackets or gloves. Hang them out to dry in a well-lit, airy place, before storing in a relatively dry environment. In our tropical climate, putting leather items away in the bomb shelter or store room may cause mould or mildew to grow, which trust me, is not something you want to be dealing with.

My husband hangs his leather jacket in our regular closet, with a desiccant dehumidifier to suck all the moisture from the space.

Just a little effort will help ensure that your warm wear continue to serve you well, the next time a cool holiday opportunity comes around. Any more tips on storing rarely-worn winter clothes? Let us know at mynicehome@mailbox.hdb.gov.sg. 🙂
