What a long day it has been, right? Now if only there is something to help you relax a little. My favourite way to unwind after a long day is to give myself a little spa treatment, at home! Read on for some easy-peasy chip-as-chips tips to make your body feel real nice.
Set the mood
First step to a cosy session of relaxation: set the mood! Dim the lights, light up candles, and put on some soothing music. Ambient sounds are known to help with relaxation, and my favourite is the sound of rain falling in the background; pitter patter. Check out A Soft Murmur for a range of nerve-soothing ambient sounds.
Make a fancy drink
Make yourself a fancy ‘spa drink’ by adding slices of your favourite fruit into a jug of water. Simple. I always use a combination of lemons and whatever fruits I have in my fridge, and some mint leaves if I am feeling extra fancy. Lemon water combinations have been proven to boost your immune system, aid with digestion and improve your skin condition – delicious and good for your body!
Aromatherapy is known for its ability to relieve stress, lift up moods, regulate sleep. Load up on soft cotton towels, soak them in hot water with a few drops of essential oil -- lavender or eucalyptus -- and use them to clean your face, just like how they do it in spas.
Slough off old skin with some good ol’ exfoliation. Create your own scrub by combining equal parts granulated sugar with liquefied coconut oil into a paste-like consistency. The sugar gently removes dead skin while the coconut oil hydrates your skin, and it can be used for your entire body, from face to lips to body.
Is a spa experience ever complete without a mask? Here’s a good recipe to deal with stress-induced breakouts. Mix one tablespoon each of turmeric, raw honey, and milk (the mixture should be thick, not too runny). Apply all over and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing. The turmeric is anti-inflammatory, honey is anti-bacterial, and the lactic acid in the milk gently exfoliates, leaving your complexion clear and glowing.
Take your time
Finally, take your time in the shower to wash everything off. Sip on the fancy drink you made earlier. Once you step out of the shower, you will be glowing – inside and out – and what is stress?
