Double Duty Furniture

Setting up a home is exciting and fun, but the choices available can be mind-boggling! With so many things to fit into a cosy space, it makes sense to fit your home with multi-functional pieces. Items that work extra hard—those that serve double, even triple, duty get a thumbs up from me.

Bathroom

An Airbnb apartment that I once stayed in, had a mirrored bathroom cabinet. I thought it was brilliant, because the shelves were the perfect place to store extra toiletries. When I got my flat, I replaced the existing mirrors in my bathrooms with mirrored bathroom cabinets, and I could not be happier with them.

Your interior decorator can customise one for you, but you can easily get them off the rack from online retailers, or large furniture stores here.

Mirror, mirror on the wall. Extra storage is the best of them all

Living room

I used to think that a coffee table was essential till a furniture promoter showed me how to fashion a makeshift one from an ottoman and a tray. (Putting a tray on top of a stool works well too.) One year since moving into my new place, I realised that my home is fine, sans coffee table. I have extra space for my toddler to run around in, and there is one fewer piece of furniture to knock into.

If you want a ‘permanent’ coffee table though, look for one that is more than just a space for mugs and weary feet! Lift top tables offer concealed storage space, and can double up as a dining or work surface too.

Bedroom

Storage bed frames are a smart way to fit even more things into your sleeping space. Lift the bed base and you have storage for additional sheets and blankets, even bulky winter wear! However, if your mattress is heavy, or your items will get regular use, you might be better off with frames that have drawers built in, for extra storage space under the bed.

Storage = LIFE!

Mirrored cupboards are another double-duty furniture idea. Beyond a place for your clothes, and helping you make sure that your #OOTD is flawless, they give the illusion of a larger space too. Yes, please!

When it comes to mirrors, the bigger the better

Study/ guest room

For guests who occasionally stay over (hi mom and dad!), sofa beds are great as they serve a host of functions on other days. Imagine curling up in it with a good book and a steaming mug of tea—so perfect! Hidden wall beds are also an option, albeit a more expensive one. Some are even integrated with items like shelves, a desk, or a sofa. They are great to help free up floor space, as they fold up and out of the way when not in use.
