If life throws you some lemons, don’t just make lemonade – use them to clean and freshen up your home!
These sunny citrus fruits have countless uses as the citric acid they contain makes them good cleaning agents. There are plenty of ways to use lemons, but here are my favourite six.
1. Freshen your Refrigerator
Lemons can be used as a natural air freshener to combat unpleasant odours throughout the house. To remove odours in your refrigerator, place a clean sponge soaked in lemon juice inside. At the same time, try to locate the source of the smell and get rid of it.
2. Brighten Clothes
Substitute bleach with a cup of freshly-squeezed lemon juice. To brighten up whites that have yellowed or don’t look as pristine as they used to, soak them overnight in a basin of water mixed with about a cup of lemon juice before you wash them.
3. Eliminate Stains
Remove ink or coffee stains on fabric by dabbing salt and lemon juice on the mark. Leave it for a few minutes, then rinse well and wash as per normal. You can also treat underarm stains on clothes with equal parts lemon juice and water.
4. Clean Greasy Dishes
Tackle grease after cooking by squeezing lemon juice onto the dishes and let it sit in for a few minutes. Then, mix in some baking soda and scrub away the dirt.
5. Remove Tarnish
To remove tarnish on metal surfaces like copper or brass, cut a lemon into half, rub it on the surface, then polish with a soft clean cloth. For stronger cleaning power, mix lemon juice with salt and apply it on the surface. Let it sit for five minutes before rinsing with warm water.
6. Disinfect Surfaces
The acidity of lemon juice makes it an alternative to chemical cleaners. Make a concentrated solution of lemon juice in a spray bottle and use it on sinks, chopping boards and table tops.
