We have shared with you some historical nuggets of Jurong and the town’s evolution since the 1960s. While the town has a long history, my memories of Jurong span the more recent decades of the 1990s and 2000s, being all of 25. Despite that, I am a true blue Jurong girl, born and bred in this vibrant town, located on the Western side of our sunny island.
From its range of established amenities to the many interesting attractions it boasts in its backyard, Jurong is a perfect home for heartlanders like me. I cannot ask for a lovelier place to grow up in than Jurong.
My West Side Story
A part of Jurong Lake, revealed
The popular Jurong Bird Park, one of my favourite haunts as a child
The Jurong Bird Park was one of my favourite childhood places. The flamingoes were mesmerising to watch – with their pink feathers and spindly legs, they reminded me of ballerinas in frilly tutus!
Come to think of it , Jurong boasts rather an extensive range of parks and nature reserves which we ‘westies’ are fortunate to have. As I live within walking distance to the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, I often go for evening walks or jogs by Jurong Lake while soaking up the absolutely stunning backdrop of a beautiful sunset.
Ahh, picture perfect, especially during sunset…
…and at dusk as well!
These days, home is much more vibrant than it ever was, with new malls (JCube, Jem and Westgate) having sprung up near the Jurong East MRT Station, also known as Jurong Gateway. Why head to crowded Orchard Road when we have unique shops and big brands located nearby! The malls are now the #1 hangout spots for meet-ups amongst my ‘westie’ friends.
Psst… Have You Heard?
The Jurong Lake district is set to be rejuvenated and transformed into an even more vibrant district in Singapore. The recent new malls around the Jurong Gateway area are just a start in its development to become the biggest commercial hub outside Singapore’s city centre, as part of HDB’s Remaking Our Heartland plans for the Jurong Lake area. There are many more exciting things to come, and we’ll share them with you here on MyNiceHome!
